LOS LOBOS 45th ANNIVERSARY SHOW LIVE WEBCAST

Apr 14, 2019

Los Lobos is truly a quintessential American band, and that was obvious during their show last night at the Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, CA. Bob Weir and Chris Robinson may have been backstage hanging out, but all eyes were on stage as Lobos presented a celebration of 45 years making music. Starting with an acoustic set and transforming into a rocking electric set, they had the sold out house dancing all night long.

Los Lobos' catalog of songs gives them what seems like limitless options for a set list, but they still somehow find a ways to include some covers that they make their own. Interspersed with original hits like "Will The Wolf Survive", "Chuco's Cumbia", "Mas y Mas", "Angel Dance", they also included renditions of the iconic Cuban "Guantanamera", Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and the Grateful Dead's "West LA Fadeaway". Don't take our word for it, watch the archive.

Huge thanks to Roger McNamee and Moonalice for their support in making this live stream happen, Sweetwater Music Hall for making it so easy for us. Video directed by Arthur Rosato, streaming by Patrick Spohrer, a Chime Interactive production by Jon Luini. Live audio mix by Michael Wilson from the Sweetwater.

SAMMY HAGAR ALBUM ANNIVERSARIES: VAN HALEN 5150

Mar 24, 2019

This week we celebrated the 33rd anniversary of 5150, the album where Sammy Hagar and Van Halen joined forces.

To commemorate this anniversary we dipped into our archives and pulled out these gems of Sammy discussing the album and the experience of performing those songs for the first time then and now with the Circle.

Whenever we sit down and interview Sammy for one project we're also thinking about what else we can accomplish while we have him. This footage came from a side conversation during an interview introducing the Circle. We knew it would be useful but it didn't become clear until now. When preparation and serendipity meet, it's always satisfying.

ROGER MCNAMEE IN CONVERSATION WITH ELIZABETH DWOSKIN (Washington Post's Silcon Valley Correspondent) at Book Passage

Mar 24, 2019

We've enjoyed working with Roger McNamee and his band Moonalice for years. Whether it's on website development, live streaming, or music videos, he's always been a great partner in envisioning the future.

He now has a new book out, "Zucked," which raises important issues about the dangers of data economy and what questions we need to be thoughtful about regarding data privacy and rights.

Check out this Q&A we filmed of him with Elizabeth Dwoskin, Washington Post's Silicon Valley Correspondent.

Thanks to Book Passage Bookstore & Cafe for their assistance and support.

EG CONFERENCE TEXT TUMBLER VISUALIZER

Mar 10, 2019

This was a fun visualizer tool to build! Below is a video of a screen capture of the home page refresh we just launched for the always incredible EG Conference.

Stemming from a creative idea by EG impressario Mike Hawley and designer Michael Rylander, we set to work building and fine tuning an implementation of an odometer-style text-tumbler to present glimpses past EG presenters and themes, tied around the idea of reuniting together for this year's event.

Built based on the text-roller fork of the odometer js tool, we added in custom timing events with image fades and ken burns effect, then plugged it into Drupal. To make it even easier, adding new images and text pairings is as easy as uploading a new image to a folder on the server. To keep it fresh, each page load shuffles up the order, but always keeps the same start and end, and inserts a specific branding slide every 5 words. Topped off with good browser compatability, iOS support, and responsive design.

SAMMY HAGAR & THE CIRCLE "TRUST FUND BABY" LYRIC VIDEO

Jan 28, 2019

Enjoy our lyric video for Sammy & The Circle's new single from the upcoming album "Space Between". This was the first listen of original music from The Circle and was released as an exclusive with Rolling Stone.

Chime team member (and Affect Effects whiz) Mark Thornton has done great work with us for Sammy in the past, and once again hits the mark (sorry for succumbing to the irresistibly bad pun).

TOWER OF POWER'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERTS CAPTURED IN 4K

June 2, 2018

Having grown up in the East Bay with their music, we were overjoyed to be asked to come in and document two nights of high energy performances at the Fox Theater in Oakland as funk/soul legends Tower of Power celebrated their 50th year. Two sold out crowds were treated to long evenings of the hits, old and new. The core band was joined by former members Lenny Pickett (who moved on to be Saturday Night Live band leader) and keyboardist Chester Thompson and others, as well as a string section.

Chime's crew included a directed (by the always amazing Arthur Rosato) 9-camera gorgeous 4K shoot including jib and robo rail cam as well as custom lighting by award-winning (and all around great guy), Jeff Ravitz. We are currently editing this for future release.

THOMAS DOLBY - THE SPEED OF SOUND LIVE STREAMING EVENT

Oct 14, 2016

A live streaming event featuring an evening of stories & music celebrating the release of Thomas's new book "The Speed of Sound". It was a joy when Thomas called us to ask if we were "still doing webcasting" to help out with this very special launch of his brand new book. We last worked together on his return to the musical stage on "The Sole Inhabitant" and this time around it was both a bit of live music looping, but also reading of selections from his memoir, and a live Q&A with Kari Byron (Mythbusters).

For this event, we created a hybrid stream where the first hour was streamed live on Facebook combined with a high def PPV stream of the entire evening which included additional performance and Q&A (including video questions from remote fans). We also helped run a special giveaway contest where fans won the digital copy of the book, read by Thomas himself.

HARDLY STRICTLY BLUEGRASS VIDEO ARCHIVES AT CENTER OF NEW "HARDLY STRICTLY WARREN" MUSEUM EXHIBIT

Sep 8, 2014

Chime has handled video production for the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival since 2002 and for the first time the public can finally experience some of the magic of the annual compilation DVDs that we make for the Hellman family's private archives. The video footage is at the center of a brand new exhibit coming to the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco. Read on below for details.

Hardly Strictly Warren Hellman, a new exhibition at The Contemporary Jewish Museum (The CJM) opening Thursday, September 18, celebrates the life of one of San Francisco's greatest and most beloved benefactors. Hellman was a man of eclectic interests and passions who formed friendships with a wide variety of people from all parts of society. A true original, he was an investment banker, philanthropist, musician, and music enthusiast who believed in the importance of community arts. Among a host of business and philanthropic accomplishments, Hellman may now be best recognized for the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival (HSB), which he founded in 2001. Held annually in Golden Gate Park, the free festival draws more than 700,000 people. In Hellman's own words, he hoped HSB would be a space of a few days where "everyone could get along."

Hardly Strictly Warren Hellman will center on video footage from HSB's archive of live performances - making many hours available to the general public for the first time. Special, resonant personal objects will also be included - such as Hellman's Star-of-David rhinestone studded jacket and a banjo signed by HSB headliners - along with HSB ephemera.

Hardly Strictly Warren Hellman will be on display in The CJM’s soaring Stephen and Maribelle Leavitt Yud Gallery, a dramatic space dedicated to sound installations and music-based exhibitions. At the heart of the exhibition are many hours of HSB video footage available to the public for the first time. The archival footage will be presented one Festival day and one stage at a time. Screenings will be listed on The Museum’s website so that visitors can catch their favorite performers, revisit sets they loved, or see for the first time those they may have missed.

"Warren Hellman and the Bluegrass Festival he bequeathed to the city of San Francisco are true local icons," says Lori Starr, The CJM's Executive Director. "Hardly Strictly Warren Hellman" will allow visitors to immerse themselves in the spirit of the Festival, as an expression of the joy Hellman received from giving to others and the city he loved, and in a Museum he helped shape."

EG 8

May 1-3, 2014

One of the best conferences out there, EG (now in it's 8th year) once again delivered an amazing 3 days of inspiring discussion and creativity with innovators, scientists & artists of all types (musicians, painters, magicians, writers and more) on-stage and off.

165 close-up photos of the EG family assembled into a photomosaic of the e.g. logo.
(c)2014 jon luini.

"Creativity doesn't happen in a vacuum. Or on a clock. Or when you pay for it. It's a collective opportunity, and there's no substitute for being immersed with the best. More intimate, more concentrated, more consistently surprising than any other gathering we know of, and definitely not stuck in any narrow industrial rut, EG explores the new and the different by engaging a remarkable mix of people. It is a place to find something priceless: your next great idea."

Chime spent the last year contributing digital strategy concepts and also stepped in to help produce the live stream (of long-time EG partner McCune's excellent video production), with our streaming partner Mobile Rider. Encoding by Shinya Suzuki (who was also on hand with us at TEDxSantaCruz and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass).

We also let the spirit of creativity grab hold and embarked on a last-minute concept to capture the essence of EG through close-up photos of ~200 members of of the EG family. That everyone was so open to the request (turning it instead into a great conversation starter) is a good example of the open atmosphere - whether it was pulitzer winners, olympic medalists, volunteer staff, or engaged attendees. Click on the image above to view in a larger size.

Much fun was had in after-hours music jams, and another "EG After Hours" video is in production (watch last year's here). #OnlyAtEG, indeed!

CONVERSE REPRESENT SF - 5 NIGHTS OF MUSIC AT SLIM'S

June 23-27, 2013

For five nights in June, Converse celebrated five genres of music that represent San Francisco and its residents. The free concert series took place at Slim's and featured Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Juicy J, Hot Chip, Mastodon, Suicidal Tendencies and more.

Converse gave away tickets to the shows online for FREE and social media was tightly integrated into the event. Each night, a single song was selected and featured in a music video and free MP3 download. A mini documentary of the week of shows including band interviews as well as other members of the San Francisco music scene will be coming out in the weeks to come.

The production was a smooth collaboration between Converse, Cornerstone (agency), Lacy Maxwell Productions, Pulse Films, and the always-amazing Slim's staff. Chime's Jon Luini joined the UK-based Pulse Films to provide local crew & pre-production as well as handle line producer duties and additional camera work for the run of shows. A round-the-clock team started with capturing interviews and b-roll around town shooting the event & interviews during the show continued all night with media import, transcoding and sync and then entered into editing for the following day. Director Sam Wrench chose different approaches for each night's video to suit the different styles of music, which you can see below. Make sure to check the Youtube description for a link to a free download of the song.

Shout out to our amazing crew: Rocky Mullin (driver/runner & location scout), Joey Maloney, & Roddy Blelloch (camera), Randi Jacobs (sound), Albert Lopez (import, transcoding, sync), Tom Watson (editor), Sam Wrench (director, camera). Extra thanks to John and Dan from Pulse, Lacy, Graham, Kyle and others at Lacy Maxwell Prod, David, Ben, Jamie, Sonia and others at Converse and Cornerstone, and Shana plus the usual wonderful Slim's staff.

ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCES ACQUISITION OF DIGITAL LOGS OF MOONALICE'S "IT'S 4:20 SOMEWHERE" FOR THE LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES

Aug 28, 2012

It's a been a very fun trip working with Roger McNamee and Moonalice these past years and this recognition from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum is a nice high point!

"The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced that the digital logs for Moonalice's "It's 4:20 Somewhere" have been acquired for the Library and Archives. Libraries and archives collect, preserve and provide access to the materials that best capture important moments and movements in history, regardless of format, and the Moonalice logs help tell the story of music's digital revolution; specifically the rise of direct-from-artist (DFA) distribution. Moonalice is the first band without a label to achieve one million downloads of a song from its own servers, direct-from-artist. "It's 4:20 Somewhere" has been downloaded over two million times."

IUMA RETURNS, THANKS TO INTERNET ARCHIVE

The Internet Archive team invited the IUMA founders Rob Lord, Jeff Patterson and Jon Luini up for a visit and Jon took them up on the offer. (Jon Luini, Jason Scott, Brewster Kahle and Alexis Rossi)

May 29, 2012

Cool news today (May 29 '12) that Jason Scott over at the Internet Archive along with early IUMA supporter John Gilmore helped resurrect much of the IUMA archive and bring back the music. It's nice to see people still remembering IUMA - I have amazing memories of those early days where innovation was going down on a daily basis. There are still some acts missing from the archive (not to mention so much of Beach and Brandee's amazing award winning artwork!) so I'm going to dig through the old archive tapes to help flesh it out.

At my visit to the Archive, Brewster remembered how supportive IUMA was back when he started out and wanted to use the name "Internet Archive". California was blocking him based on the similarly of his desired name with IUMA's (Internet Underground Music Archive). I don't remember who in the office filed that paperwork, but glad we did - who knew that they'd repay the favor 16 years later.

Next up: trying to get Addicted To Noise archives up.

MOONALICE SINGLE IS FIRST TO GO MULTI-PLATINUM FROM A BAND'S OWN SERVERS

This photo shows the announcement as featured in New York's Times Square, along with David Singer's artwork. Click photo for larger view.

Apr 24, 2012

Chime has been working with Moonalice and Roger McNamee for years providing Digital Strategy services and multimedia production, as well as the development of the Moonalice satellite broadcast network (with partner Mobile Rider) that hypercasts (webcasts) every show in HD to desktop and mobile. This recognition of an incredible achievement by an independent band is a milestone in what is still the beginning of an increasingly exciting future where bands are able to leverage technology in groundbreaking ways.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- On the afternoon of April 20, 2012, Bay Area band Moonalice went boldly where no band has gone before when its signature single, "It's 4:20 Somewhere," passed 2 million downloads from the band's website. The feat is remarkable considering that the band has no label, no manager or publicist.

The Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame has certified "It's 4:20 Somewhere" as the only platinum single - one million downloads - from a band's own servers. It is now the first multi-platinum single from a band's servers.

G. LOVE VISITS SAN FRANCISCO "LITTLE KIDS ROCK" CLASSROOM

Feb 24, 2012

G. Love took a moment away from the rest of his alternative/rock/blues/funk band, G. Love & Special Sauce, to spend a couple hours with Little Kids Rock (LKR) elementary school students at Guadalupe Elementary School in San Francisco, CA. Before playing to a sold out crowd at the historic Fillmore Theater that evening, G. Love informally chatted with the students, took questions and talked about the important of music. He then played a few tunes (with singalongs!), jammed with the class on a few more, and then closed things out with an unveiling of more LKR instrument donations to the school - the 2,000th to local Bay Area Little Kids Rock programs! Bay Area Little Kids Rock board members were out in force to soak up the impact of these visits on the kids (see photo above, Chime founder and LKR Bay Area board member Jon Luini on far right).

GOOGLE+ HANGOUTS ON AIR W/ CHICKENFOOT (JOE SATRIANI, MICHAEL ANTHONY, SAMMY HAGAR, & KENNY ARONOFF)

Jan 7, 2012

On Saturday, January 7, Chime (in partnership with Google), held a series of Google+ Hangout On Air sessions with members of Chickenfoot. These sessions follow up on the Hangouts done with the band back in 2010 (the first with established artists) and were among the first to make use of the brand new "on air" features that allow unlimited fans to watch the hangouts (beyond the previous limit of 10 participants), and also have them recorded on YouTube. The band fielded questions in realtime from fans who submitted questions a few hours ahead of time to earn an invitation to ask their questions directly via the video conference that Hangout provides.

F. WARREN HELLMAN, BELOVED FATHER, HUSBAND, BROTHER; PRIVATE EQUITY PIONEER; FOUNDER OF SAN FRANCISCO'S HARDLY STRICTLY BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL (1934 - 2011)

Dec 21, 2011

All of us who were lucky enough to know Warren, or simply enjoyed Hardly Strictly Bluegrass each year (his gift to San Francisco and beyond) are still in shock after his passing in late December. For friends, family and the public who loved him, the memorial service was broadcast live online and is also still available to watch below. Being fortunate enough to handle video production & archival for the past decade has been an amazing pleasure and the highlight of each year. Though Warren has ensured the festival will continue for many years, it will not be the same without him there. The service was incredibly moving and full of touching stories and music. We miss you, Warren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the San Francisco Free Clinic (sffc.org), The Bay Citizen (baycitizen.org) and the San Francisco School Alliance (sfschoolalliance.org). Also, consider a donation of blood or platelets to your local blood bank. In San Francisco and the Bay Area, Blood Centers of the Pacific (bloodcenters.org) provides this gift of life to those in need.

-----

"What does move me is the philanthropic stuff," he told Forbes magazine in 2006. "Giving really does move me. Part of it is selfish. It's fun to be appreciated. But the other part is that good things really are growing."

He called the bluegrass festival a "selfish gift," one that he, the musicians and the community could all enjoy.

"How could you have more fun than that?" he told Forbes. "What the hell is money for if it isn't for something like that?"

Now a #1 NEW YORK TIMES Best Seller!
SAMMY HAGAR
RED, MY UNCENSORED LIFE IN ROCK

This Chime-managed promotion was part of our ongoing Digital Strategy Services for the Red Rocker. We worked hand-in-hand with publisher HarperCollins (who published the book on their IT BOOKS imprint) for their book signings and handled the following for the book launch:
  • Produced teaser "Every Picture Tells A Story" video in advance of the book's release
  • Produced exclusive video content with an interview with Sammy and co-author Joel Selvin. This footage was used as exclusive enhanced content for the eBook release and also was the source material for exclusive promotional video podcast teasers.
  • Following the book release, produced an additional "behind the scenes" video which took fans with Sammy on the book tour
  • Managed social networking updates before release, during the book tour, and post release
  • Ran giveaway contest providing exclusive prize packs for fans attending the book signings

WELCOME, TOAD THE WET SPROCKET

Mar 31, 2011
Wayback machine alert! I remember back in 1994 in the early days of IUMA going with our advisor Michael Tiemann (then of Cygnus, later Redhat) to have dinner with Glenn Phillip's brother and talk about the music biz and see his home studio. My band at the time was covering Toad songs and we were young enough to still be impressed by anyone remotely connected to bands we liked. It was a great evening (great homemade teriyaki chicken, as i recall). I bumped into Glenn here and there over the next decade or so and was happy when they reunited as Toad a while back. So this is a roundabout way to say it's a pleasure to have Toad the Wet Sprocket join the Chime family at last. Nothing fancy, just helping out with hosting, but I imagine it won't be long until we do something more involved!

AL HIRSCHFELD INSTALLATION AT NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY @ LINCOLN CENTER

Jan 25, 2011
Once in a while we are fortunate enough to work with people outside of the music space that just bowl us over. The Al Hirschfeld Foundation is one such example and we headed to New York and had a great time at this fine shindig unveiling an amazing Hirschfeld installation. So much talent and history in the room! David Leopold and everyone did a wonderful job putting it all together, Louise Hirschfeld Cullman shared some kind words about the Hirschfeld web site we've been working on and Eli Wallach was a particularly entertaining man to meet!
